The Benefits of a Mattress Protector

A customer stopped in to our Kokomo mattress store and asked our salesperson if we sell mattress protectors. “Of course we do!” She exclaimed. “We highly recommend mattress protectors for every purchase, after all, they protect your investment.”

“But do you require them in order to receive a warranty?” The customer asked. “I’ve just come from Mattress Firm Kokomo, Indiana, and they require them.”

“We don’t require them, you will receive a full warranty whether you purchase a mattress protector from our Kokomo mattress store or any other mattress stores in Kokomo, Indiana.” She explained. “However, we do understand why they might be required. Mattresses collect lots of bodily fluids, skin flakes, dust mites, allergens and moisture. Keeping them clean and free of that moisture can make a difference in how long you keep a mattress and how well it wears over time. Plus, some bodily fluids will void your warranty, so protecting your mattress is the best way to keep your warranty intact in the case of an accident.”

Conversations like the one above occur all the time in our stores. Lots of Indianapolis mattress stores and Kokomo mattress stores and mattress stores across the county require you purchase their mattress protector with your new mattress in order to receive their warranty. While we don’t require you to use our protector or purchase a new one with your new mattress, we do believe you should have one. We sell the Malouf Sleep Tite Protectors and the Quilt Tite Mattress Pads with Protection in our stores. This is the type we like the best, but we understand there are others, and you may prefer a different one, or you may already have one and don’t need another. This is why we don’t require it. However, we do recommend it.

Mattress protectors don’t last forever. They typically are good for around 250 washes. While they may have a warranty that exceeds that, replacing a failed protector will not take away the damage that has already been done to your mattress. We recommend replacing the protectors every 5 years, regardless of brand, just to be safe. Urine and blood stains will absolutely void your warranty, so regularly replacing a protector will help ensure this doesn’t happen.

Sometimes I hear concerns about comfort, noise or heat. A good protector is thin like a fitted sheet and won’t affect the feel of a mattress. They are typically fabric on the surface with a moisture blocking film underneath. Our protectors are 100% cotton Terry with a polyurethane laminate underneath. They won’t make that “plastic-y” noise like the old school vinyl styles. That laminate is also breathable so they won’t cause a person to retain heat because of their presence. There are really no downsides to a good protector.

If you purchase a mattress at Holder Mattress, in our Kokomo mattress store or Carmel mattress store, you will be asked if you need a mattress protector. You won’t be required to purchase one, but we will recommend it. After all, we’ve had far too many calls asking how to clean a stained mattress. Trust us, you won’t like the answer. Prevention is definitely the key and mattress protectors are the best way to do that.
